MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL TREATS
A version of the story behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, better known as the Mooncake Festival, began with a tale, long ago, when the Earth had ten Suns. As the heat from the Suns ravaged the world with a terrible drought, the great archer, Hou Yi, shot down nine of the ten Suns requested by the Emperor of Heaven.
The feat saved lives on Earth and Hou Yi was rewarded the elixir of immortality. He planned to share the elixir with his beautiful wife, Chang’e. However, while Hou Yi was away hunting, his wicked apprentice, Feng Meng, came to his home to steal the elixir. Chang’e, determined to keep it out of Feng’s hands, drank the potion and ascended to the heavens, where she took the moon as her home. This occasion is now celebrated by families gathering for dinner, lighting paper lanterns, and eating mooncakes.
